    Interesting Carputer findings

Well for starters there seems to be problems with wet weather.
The computer and all parts were dry (no leakage) but all the time it was wet the touchscreen wouldnt work - could get the picture up but not operate it.

That 1 is still confusing me as i think it is 100% wet weather related but there is no reason for it.

Secondly when mounting hardrives (normal ones not laptop 1's or anything special) dont try to suspend them to limit the shock as this seems to make em worse. My comp kept crashing - so i took the harddrives and mounted em firm to the boot floor and instantly it stopped playing up.

Oh yeah and mount em on end as any harsh shocks in a car are usually up and down and this way it stops the heads crashing.

    End of findings

Cool Skuzzle, Some good advice there... I will be mounting all my components in the boot very soon. This will come in handy.

the mountign of the hdd's is a controversial issue skuzzle...

many argue for the drives to be placed horizontal.... whilst you may be protecting the platters from crashing (arguable btw) you will experience much faster read head failure as it is not designed to cope with stress in the lateral plane. incidentally mine is mounted pretty much horizontal

as for mountign the HDDs - yes, many suggest mounting firmly, but mine is on a small spongey type base - doesn't bounce (thus setting up harmonics - the reason why it is suggested to not suspend your drives etc) yet stops any hard shock getting through.

it's lasted thus far in my car without a single problem (even scan disk shows no bad sectors), and my ride is not the gentelest ever on my 60/40mm drop and koni's set to full hard on the bumpy shitty roads near me

the usb cable is good advice, but why you would need more than three meters is beyond me

been going in my car fine for couple of months now

I bought the 5m cable because I thought that I was going to need it when routing from the screen along the interior side sills and into my boot build. Now that I have run it up the middle of the car I have a load of redundant cable length. I will try it out when all the internals are installed and see what happens... these things are too damn expensive to just go out and buy new stuff all the time!!

i coulda done with 4m to be honest - most rca cables come in 5m lengths so it seems a good length but dont work too well with usb - lol

But anyways the harddrive issues. After firmly mounting it after removing the suspension idea the computer has been fine whereas before it would crash every 10 - 20 mins on a bumpy road.

    Hello

    What about this http://www.pcsilent.de/enpd_novibes_...oise_reduction
It is used to reduce HDD noise, but I can see it working in a Car install environment with ease.

    Ciao,

to honest i wouldn't wanna risk it as after testing suspension of the drive although it doesnt get any harsh shocks the constant movement seems worse than just occasional hard bumps.
