    De-resticting / Drilling holes

Hi, I have an S reg mk4 1.8 16v. I was thinking of de-restricting the airbox, and have heard of people drilling holes into the sides of the box, and also the inlet pipe.. i am not too keen on the idea of putting cold-air ducting to lots of holes on the airbox, so i was thinking of just a few holes on the front side of the pipe, where it lies next to the grille..

Has anyone done this? What will it sound like? (i have heard that holes in the airbox itself sound nice)

    Any info would be great!

    Cheers

Just derestricting the air box will do the trick to start with, I wouldnt really bother with drilling any holes tho

Like Dave , if you drilled holes in the bottom of the air box the induction system would suck in all the hot air that you are trying to keep out of your system .

Derestrict, slap in a decent panel filter (K&N or PVD) and go for a Vectra C inlet pipe - thewn you'll almost have a poor mans viper

More gen on the inlet pipe here

If your going to stick a performance filter in stick with K&N and forget any foam based filters as these are very bad for your engine (filtration rate is very very bad). The K&N is a little better but make sure you don't over oil if you need to oil the filter, it may come pre-oiled.

    re: De-resticting / Drilling holes

    thanks for the advice guys,

ive already got a k&n panel fitted, so i'll go ahead and derestrict.. but what i would like is something that will give me a nicer sound.. will derestriction alone affect the sound? any recomendations?

    cheers

I don't think the derestricted box changes the sound much i'm afraid . I've certainly not noticed a huge sound difference. The only way to run a induction kit is to build your own heat prove heatbox around the cone and get a good sized cold air feed to it. This will give you the noise

Fit the vectra induction pipes and your astra will sing a different tune. The standard pipe is baffled to reduce intake noise. It's a cut and shut job but the parts are cheap, do it right and it looks factory fit.

Its a tight fit , i think the best plan is to remove the airbox first before removing the standard cold air feed. Becareful when you remove the box as you can snap the plastic tabs if you force it too much ops:
