after the car has been used and is stationary, the engine sounds very much like a diesel engine when it ticks over.
what could be causing this?
think i have the same sort of problem m8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's a Dan Paveley Moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, i have the exact same problem. The car makes a terrible noise just like a diesel engine!
yeah my GSI also does this
Probably just the tank vent valve releasing vapours, nothing to be concerned about unless its sounding like diesel knock or a combine harvester, I assume your engine oil level is OK.

Check your oil level and reply back mate.

it could be that the cam belt needs to be replaced.
this happend on mine and quite a few of other peoples
this has been going on with my car for months, 8 to be precise. It only occurs when the oil gets low, which appears to be once a week as it uses a litre a week.

a litre of oil a week? i would be concerned. My mum has a 1.3CDTI corsa driving school car and that drinks oil but not as much as 1 litre a week. diesels drink more oil that petrol (up to .5litre per 1000km), but i really dont think it should be drinking that much, im no mechanic but i think it may be burning oil or else there is a leak somewhere. Could be that ur car SteveD is just thirsty4oil, but if it was me, i'd get it checked out.Originally Posted by SteveD
Also use thinker (not fully synthetic) as the thinker the oil the less it will burn i.e thin oil burns easier and quicker
