Advice on buying a 1.6 SXi

    Hi, new here.

I'm wanting to buy a 1.6 SXi and am going to go look at one tomorrow night, its a low mileage 2001 Y reg.

Can anyone tell me what common problems I should be looking for or what I should be checking in general?

    Thanks in advance

    Jez

Maka, I aint had a problem with oil at all on mine...infact i'm not convinced the level has ever changed since its been serviced!

Just look at how well worn it is like any other car. As well as the usual servicing etc.

I bought mine low mileage, put 10,000 miles on it since and not heard a whistle from it...

Have any other owners have problems with oil usage or is Maka just unlucky? can't find anything about this on carsurvey.

I don't think its a major problem, I've certainly not had any problems.

Here's a link to Maka oil thread Clickety Click

Just common sense checks, like beware of a gunked up filler cap.
Look at the problems mentioned in the technical section.
It's generally the 2.0 engines that suffer from the cracked manifold.

The 1.6 16vs are cracking engines.

The 1.6 16v engine is very good.

You are already past the speed limit on the slip roads of motorways.

Fuel is very good, 250-300 miles from a full tank.

Vauxhall said just check oil every two weeks, and before long trips, then you cant go wrong.

Mine used 1 1/2 - 2 ltr of oil in 4500 miles, in three months.
I should have checked my oil but never, as I had a MK3 1.4 8v and always checked the oil, and never went down, so I just never checked with this car.

But other good thing about this car is the insurance, it's cheap.

    thats on all the astras.

1.6 16v engine is a reliable engine low fuel consumption, group 5 insurance etc etc

just make sure you wont be wanting outstanding performance cos you wont be getting it.
