    IT help required

    i'm sorting out the inlaws pc at the mo....

    and it has an annoying problem at startup when it beeps 3 times,comes up with 'bad file name' and a load of sqiggles whilst booting up.

    any ideas folks??

    Think it is memory. Look in the motherboard book for diagnostic beeps

    hmm - it seems to be where the previous owner has clumsily uninstalled programmes - its beyond me how to set it right.

    Is it Windows XP. If it is then try system restore

    Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> system tools -> System restore

    Then set it back to when it worked ;o)

    1 beep and then 3 beeps is Video card
    1 long beep means the machine is not reaching POST
    No beep is Memory, CPU or Motherboard

    id dispute that RR - if it beeps like **** for ages its a memory problem IMVHO
