    MK4 Coupe Chasis

I have a 5 door hatch with vauxhalls standard non sporty suspension and the thing really doesn't like to be pushed hard on cornering. I get quite a lot of body roll and "safe" understeer.

I am looking at upgrading to a sportier MK4 and tested a 2.2SRI a while back. This had a much better ride and cornered flatter. It also pulled a ton a lot easier but thats not my interest at the moment .

I like the looks of the coupe but am wondering what people think of the handling. Does it handle as well as the SRI, or is the chasis not as stiff?

    Thanks.

I dont think there will be much differance between the sri and the coupe. They both inherit uprated suspension, and should you not be completly satisfied, a set of springs costs less that a ton! Mabe you should base your opinion on which shape you like the best.

I have a coupe and my brother has a hatch. Ive driven both and I cant say Ive noticed any weakness in the coupe chassis. In fact mine handles better but it does have etter tyres and suspension than my brothers.

    re: MK4 Coupe Chasis

I think I prefer the smoother front end of the Coupe, and the colour coded rub strips are a real bonus in my eyes. The Coupe definately needs the small rear spoiler though as Coupes without them look a little odd at the back in my opinion.

Of course this all becomes irrelevant if I can get my hands on a GSI .

Why not get a coupe Turbo! You get the best of both worlds then!

I had a 2001 5 door for a few months before my Coupe arrived, very nice but the Coupe handles so much nicer and just feels heavier and more composed...but again that could be down to the bigger wheels.

    re: MK4 Coupe Chasis

Thanks for the input. Once I got the house move out of the way I think I will start my hunt for a silver coupe turbo .

The Coupe does have a stiffer shell by it's design, therefore will handle a little better.

On the Coupe and saloon, you have the metal bulhead under the rear window, you don't get this which will cause the hatch to flex a little more.

Aha I didnt realise that about the Coupe. I assumed they were pretty much identical.

But to be honest, I really don't think the likes of you and me will notice the difference on a road car.
