    Greetings All! Mrk4 engine queries

    Hi all,

I've been looking for new wheels for quite a while now, and I must admit I didn't really consider the MK4 astra initially. However a 2.0 SRI caught my eye the other day, and I couldn't resist asking the salesmen to pop the bonnet and start her up.

I was surprised to hear that the engine made a rather industrious 'diesel esque' like tapping sound for about 30 seconds and only after some harsh revving on my part, did the noise abate and die down.

The salesman was quick to point out that this was nothing to worry about, and that all vauxhall/ecotec engines were the same when cold. So my question is, could the tapping noise be a forewarning of major repairs (and expenses) to come? Was the salesmen telling porky pies and in fact the engine is probably knackered?

Its an SRI 2000, W plate with 46000 miles on the clock.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey thanks for your help

Was the job done under warranty I presume? If not, what sort of cash price are we talking for a new manifold gasket + labour?

Incidentally, it drove okay, didn't seem to make any tapping noises while on the road. After the test drive, I popped the bonnet again and the engine noise seemed subdued and low key - not at all like it was previously.

Just worried about any possible short/long term underlying, and progressively worsening issues with this noise.

Remove the heatshield and inspect exhaust manifold, the X20XEV engine is very common for cracking manifolds.

Hey Rich, thanks for the advice. I'm going to look at the car again tomorrow, that's definitely something I can check.

Hope the salesmen doesn't mind me dismantling his car

The old drained from the valve tappets and it made a weird sound next time it started. Nothinf to worry bout.

re: Greetings All! Mrk4 engine queries

Ya, been looking on the web this evening, however I've not been able to found any definitive, or tangible examples of this problem and its symptoms for the astra mk4's.

From what I can gather (correct me if I'm wrong) vectra/omega/astra's all use the same engines and i've searched on all these put didn't come up with much.

Is there a haynes maunal for the mk4?

yep they all use the same engines and i solved the tappet problem by useing 5w 30 synthetic oil it works wonders, as for the haynes manual these are the only ones they do for the astra

Carman, what oil were you using prior to that, i.e brand and viscosity?
