Immobiliser circuit at a guess but without seeing is difficult to diagnose mate. Got any more info on how and when it started doing this?

    Another question for you then:

"engine keeps cutting out. all power goes from the engine and wont start for about 2 mins... all electrics continue to run"
Does this mean the starter motor is working but the car won't fire?

Why is it that the immobiliser is always the first thing blamed

Sounds to me like it's either your HT lead breaking down (Main lead in the center of the distributor cap that connects to the coil) or the Rotor arm/Distributor cap needs replacing due to wear on the poles or a defect in the cap structure itself. If your car has a coil pack rather than a dizzy change this unit and all will be good once again
