    computer install - assistance?

so far i've selected this lot:

    VIA EPIA CL10000 1Ghz motherboard
    http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=2#p261

    512MB PC2100 DDR DIMM
    http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=4#p147

    Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM 8MB Hard Drive
    http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=7#p84

    2x Vantec SF8025L stealth 80mm fan

    sony dvd drive
    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...duct_uid=52126

    Power invertor (300W 12Vdc to 230Vac)

possibly this screen (using the video out) but by no means set on that
    http://www.mp3playerstore.com/stuff_.../In-Dash-7.htm

so apart from mouse (will be using a laptop type pad) and wires etc am i missing anything?

will also be installing a wireless pci card so it can communicate with my wireless network in my house

    any comments appreciated

You would be better off using the XGA screen from the mp3playerstore as its resolutions are more suited for pc use.

Alternatively, I have seen some touchscreen indash units of late, which would simplify the pc in that you would not need a keyboard or mouse.

For the power consider a DC-DC intelligent power supply as they are less of a drain on the cars electrical system and they power off the pc automatically when the car is turned off. Similarily they will power up when the car is turned on.

With all that contemplate getting a GPS antenna and some NAV software, and presto you have navigation on the cheap.

Also you could get a IRman (I think this is what it is called) along with the Universal steering wheel controls interface and you could use those controls as well.

Other than that I reckon you have all your bases covered.

do you have any links for the DC-DC intelligent power supply? sounds awesome...

touch screen could be cool - but expense is a bit of an issue... i had difficulty finding touch screen in dash units. do you know where you saw them?

as for the sat nav - i was contemplating adding this at a later date

    cheers basil - helpful!

really you want a laptop harddrive for it as the vibrations and bouncing of driving may cause the heads to crash.

So go for 1 that has already been shock protected by specialists.

yeah, mysellf and cal have been brainstorming this whole thing....

we (or rather he  ) mentioned using a laptop drive. the downside being the expense.

would a normal HDD mounted on a thick foam pad not be sufficient?

going to section off part of the glove box and use it as the case.... hence all the micro stuff

check out that www.mini-itx.com site and you'll see just how small these things are.... there's a guy who installed his entire computer inside of a windows XP box...

Thats a bargain for $229, Im guessing u can plug it to the PC Via the S-Video cable?
I thought of doing this but using a Shuttle PC mounted in the boot

Would a DC-DC intelligent power supply fit inside the shuttle case?
How would the sound out of the PC get to the Car speakers? would u need to connect the Pc to a headunit?
