    R5 GTT

Ok been toying with the idea of no going vaux again (dont shoot me or bob my house please) and have been offered a r5 turbo, its been in my local bodyshop for 2 years and guy has lost interest so put it up forsale.

What I was wanting to know is , has anyone owned one or known someone who has and what sort of problems did u have as I have heard they are quite bad for randomly breaking.

    Cheers

French pile of crap to put it nicely.

Weak over tunned engine with poor build quality.

Also most have them have been given death all there life, and if you tune the engine you will be forever spending on new parts when it blows.

3 of my mates have had the damn things, and have cost them a fortune.

Very old engine just with a turbo slapped on, in an over cramped engine bay, so runs hot. Very thin body panels, so dent to buggery and for feck sake don't even think of crashing, this aint no EURO NCAP 4star rating car.
    The front seat frames snap/collapse.
Old school French electrics, make friends with Autosparks.
You could buy 3 and keep one running with the bits.

These are just a few of the things I remember from my mate at college.

    Your choice really chap

My m8's girlfriend had one as her first car, it flew! took on scoobys, evos etc and won easily!, Don't think they had much complaints about the car itself but it's written off now anyway, shes got an rs turbo fiesta now and it just doesnt compare on the power side of things.

    as people have said really.

Fast as hell due to being light ---- due to being light are dangerous as hell in a crash!!

Reliabilty is the main problem, a friend of mine had one and was the first truely modified car I went in..very quick and he looked after increadibly well, turbo timers, took it easy most of the time etc.

It still blew up!! I think if you want one you need to have a real passion for them. Also doing something different to them in Modding terms will be very difficult indeed.

Being a turbo engine they are easily tuned, but being a vintage 1960's designed PUSHROD 1.4 engine it is already stressed in standard GTT form.

They didn't call it a pocket rocket without good reason with the GTT. They go bang very easily. My mate had a GT Raider, which he 'tuned' to about 180 bhp eventually.

As he wound up the boost over the course of modding it did the following (and had to have done to fix it):

Split a turbo hose (silicone hoses all round)
Blew a head gasket (higher spec gasket)
Blew the end off the intercooler (all ally intercooler)
Blew a head gasket and warped the head (new Group A gasket, wire ringed head)
Blew the turbo oil seal (new hybrid turbo)

Now it worked, but couldn't run full boost for more than 5 minutes without the temperature gauge screaming up and it idled like a broken bus because of the carb being set up to run rich to prevent detonation. He sold it on because the thing wouldn't start if he parked it too soon after giving it a bootful, because the anti-perc fan couldn't stop the fuel system vapor locking

basically i was gonna run it stock body with clio williams wheels, then a few tasty engine mods. Keep it till next winter then get rid. But if they are alot of trouble I dont have the time to sort it etc with uni and needing the car to get there every morning.

So might have a look at the honda crx del sol's.

Anymore info/opinions on the r5 tho keep it coming!!

    Cheers.
