Car cuts out now and again (Mk3)

I have a mk3 Astra sport 1.8 16 valve, I fitted a piper cross air filter (cone type) the other week and now and again the car cuts out when coming to a stop, it has only done this 4 times but it might get worse? I think it might be the cold weather. I also noticed the engine managment light come on today for the first time. Any info would be graet. Thanks. Mark

Sounds like you need to give your Idle control valve a clean mate....

    My 18.16v did the same.....

You will have to find out what the fault code is to see why the management light came on.....

Mines doing this and has been doing it for about 3 months now. Took it into the local Autoclinic to get the ICV cleaned out but that only solved the problem short term. I took it to another garage to get a diagnostics test done on it but that showed no faults.
Driving home last night the engine management light came on for the first time and stayed on for a while.

Its now booked into the local Vauxhall dealers on fri to get it sorted once and for all. Just hope it doesnt cost me a fortune otherwise my new car will be coming a lot sooner than i expected!

Sounds very dangerous that especially with winter coming. I have decided to get mine done before the really bad weather comes, lived with it for 3 months but enough is enough. :?

EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve.

Cleaning the ICV only helps the problems doesn't cure it, if the valve is knackered then the valve is knackered i'm afraid.

    Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)

Right ill give you a little tip......

There is 2 breathers that go from the back of the cam cover to the inlet, one big, one small.....
The pic may help.... the blue pipe comming of the inlet goes to the right and is just blocked off......
I made the Blue pipe off the cam cover go round into the airbox..

The small one goes to a union on the front of the Throttle body and the hole in it gets carboned up....(the way to tell is start the car take the pipe of the cam cover and see if it is sucking quite hard.... if not then it is blocked and you can unblock it by with a small piece of wire like a paper clip size....

After that the best way to stop your icv playing up is to take the big breather pipe off at the inlet pipe inlet and put an atmospheric filter on it.... (I re-routed mine back into the airbox) then block up the hole in the inlet pipe and your icv will never get gunked up again!!.

Why do you guys take your cars to vauxhall..... if the engine management light comes on.... do a fault check yourself its very easy especially on mk3 astras.. they will sting you hard for something you can do yourself..
