    2.2L (Z22SE) Timing Chain Breaking

I was going through my copy of the TIS 2000 and there is a Technical Service Bulletin which reports that the timing chain on the 2.2L (Z22SE) engine can break due to missing / insufficient lubrication of the timing chain.

A modified tensioner and lubrication nozzle have been introduced into production as of the following engine-No: 11065400 (March 2002) to rectify this possible problem.

    I have a 2001 Astra SRi 2.2L so I am concerned!

Have any Astra 2.2L (Z22SE) owners experienced any problems with their timing chain?

What are the signs and symptoms that the timing chain is going to break?

I've seen that and I think it only affects the 2.2s used in the Omega.

A few of these have come through my local dealer recently.
only problem was that most of them where out of warrently but its worth going down to vauxhall and have them check if your car is one of the know problem model's, as ive also know vauxhall to make a contibution in having the work done if its out. and it's got to be worth checking as it will be costly if it does go bang.

when they do this work they also change the oil pump gasket and rocker gaskets

    Engine No.: Z22SETA099999
("TA" in number = built at Tonewanda plant)
    Engine No.: Z22SE11099999
("11" in number = built at Kaiserslautern plant)

These are the cut offs. If your engine number is after these, then you have the revision. This info is based on Holden's Service bulletin.

Does it not give u some warning by making a hell of a noise before it goes ?

    Still better safe than sorry.

Why arent all engines non interferance like tha mazda mx5, if the belt goes it dosent matter. No damage is done.
    im bored !

My car is an Astra SRi 2.2 made in March 2001, a 'Y' Plate. I assume my car is one of the ones that should be checked/replaced?

Ross, check your engine no. to be 100% certain.

SRi Allan, I agree... non-interference engines have been around for decades. I'm really surprised why Opel chose not to design their engines that way or at least have a durable method of cam linkage with a chain for all the engines.
