    easy gearknob removal

    hi

just came up with a piss easy way to get your astra g bonded knob off.

    tools needed

    socket wrench
oil filter wrench (the canvas strap ) type
small piece of push bike innertube

cut a section out of the innertube so you have a tube about 2 inch's long, slip the tube over the gearknob this will stop the oil filter wrench from slipping. next rap the oil filter wrench around the knob attach the socket wrench and twist. with no effort at all the knob will come off undamaged (good if you ever want to put it back on) now fit nice new shiny knob (mine didnt fit, the lift up reverse bit was to big). this method works a treat no mess no fuss took me less than a minute to get the knob off. hope this helps.

NEVER EVER TWIST YOUR GEAR KNOB OFF!!!!

You can cause loads of damage to your gearbox!! I hope yours is ok???

Best way is to cut through it from the top down with a hack saw. Cut slightly to the left or right of the center to avoid the colum in the middle.

Also the gearbox and gearbox linkage mechanisms are different on the 1.8L and 2.2L engines.

Not sure about the 2L engine.

On the 2.2L the gear knob is made out of metal (under the rubber exterior).

There is a metal ridge inside the metal gear knob which slides into a metal groove on the gear selector stick.

So no matter how hard you twist the gear knob it will NEVER come off.

You have to pull the gear knob upwards or use a piece of wood to hit it from below as you need a significant amount of force to get it of the gear selector stick.

And what ever you do DO NOT CUT into the metal gear knob as you have a very high chance of cutting into the gear selector stick.

If you damage the gear selector stick than you have to replace the whole gear selector mechanism as you can not just replace the gear selector stick.

The gear selector mechanism is not cheap!
