    Running a car in

    Hi Guys

I pick up my brand new GSi on Saturday (hopefully) and can't wait. This is my third new car, and I was wondering how you need to drive it for the first few days .. I have always read that you should 'run a car in' when it is new .... I've never bothered purposely driving slower before but they weren't turbo cars.

How easy should I go on it?

not sure about turbos but i was told by a mechanic that all new engines are "bench run in" which means run in at the factory

still, i didnt go over 3500 revs in mine for the first 500 miles

Ran mine in steady for the first 1000miles. Never went above 4000rpm for those 1k.

Changed the oil at 6k for fully synth aswell. Just personal preference I suppose

I gave mine 1000km run in, was told by several people to drive it like you normally would, just not quite as hard.... i did that, had to drive hard every now and again (twice in the first 1000k's) to get into traffic, but never had a problem with the car, 7,200k's on, it runs fine and runs pretty hard someone said something about if you drive it like a granny, it'll run shite when you drive it hard... which is true, in a way... Personally, drive it like someone in a punto is chasing you everywhere, then, once run in, imagine you're being chased by a lambo - Hell, i do

Got told by one of vauxhalls top techs to keep it with in 3/4 if the rev range for the fiest 500 miles. then hold it in the gears for a bit longer than norm(Taking up the power Steadily)

Now after 3500 miles it pushes out 214bhp with 217lbs of torque @ 2300 rpm (standard Astra gsi turb)

I'd agree with those that say to run it in a bit harder than you normally would drive (3/4 rule is what I follow). I had to do it like that and changed oil right after the run in period to a semi synth oil before changing to a fully synth oil at around 5,000km mark. Just don't sit in a single rev range and speed for too long and especially the first few miles you travel is crucial (well, I shouldn't overexaggerate it) but do give it a bit when you first pick it up (as long as the engine is at normal operating temp).

Who cares, thrash it from the word go, if it goes wrong in the 1st 3 years your covered by warranty, and you probably wont keep it more than 5 years max so its only the next person who buys it who will have problems, and your trade it in anyway.

Just change the oil every 4k miles and it will still be fine when you sell it.
