    1.6i problem

soon to buy myself a M-reg 1.6i astra (cesaro) with 12 mths MOT, only thing is, it has failed the emmisions on MOT, it is missing on tickover but is fine when driving. Any ideas as to the cause? I'm assuming the owner has checked the obvious, spark plugs, leads etc.

It's spark plug related. Is the gap correct on them? (Can you still gap spark plugs?)

it could possibly be the cat, the engine management might not quite be picking up on it failing. we have just had our car in the garage for a horrible noise on a cold start up and it turned out both cats were collapsed internally this has had a massive difference on the cars performance but if the car had not have had warranty the parts alone would have totted up to £1000!!!! obviously the cost for the astra wont be as great but their still not cheap.
    Cheers Rich.

the latest update- the car has had a compression test and is down on one valve it wont be fixed until Tuesday. The car has done 80,000, why does an engine drop a valve? Is the engine knackered or will it be alright once its fixed?

I think that a compression test just checks the pressure that each cylinder is putting out, it sould be about 9.5-10.5:1 on the Vauxhall petrols
