    Help my old man

My dad HAS to get a car in 2 weeks - as his company car scheme ends.

He does 5k A MONTH, has a fuel allowance (which covers servicing, fuel, tax etc etc) of £0.40 / mile

and an annual lump sum of £3000 after tax

I've been shortlisting for him - we have worked out he needs a car to keep for a year and break even - if it lasts longer its a bonus. He has 11 points on his liscence so has to be careful (He had a quote for a Golf Mk3 1.6 for £600)

    My shortlist......
    1. BMW 520 SE + Motorway mile muncher - Expensive to maintain
    2. Saab 9000 CSE + Super build , local specialist - Expensive parts and insurance
    3. Mazda Xedos 6 2.0 + Build and reliability - Few main dealers, and complicated V6
    4. Renault Safrane 2.0 + Cheap to buy and run - worth nothing in a year
    5. Alfa 145 2.0 + Cheap to buy - probably thrashed, cant cope with miles and expensive to insure
    6. Mondeo 1.8 TD + Loads to chose from, cheap parts/servicing - He doesnt like them
    7. Citroen Xantia 1.8 TDSX + cheap to run and insure - its French
    8. Vauxhall Vectra TD + cheap to run and insure - He doesnt like them

He would consider a damaged repaired (as long as it was undeclared as that would hike the insurance otherwise)

    anyone any ideas
why do today what you can...... I'll finish this later

The Xantia's 'quirky suspension' is a bit of a put off.

I have seen some XM's 2.1 TD dirt cheap - but I think these are even more trouble.

He is essentially looking for a 50 60,000 miler which can take another 100,000 over a year and a half - even if its only worth £500 after that - but cuts it when he pulls up next to the boss
(as surprise surprise the boss keeps his company car)

Because an 18 year old Talbot Samba 1.1 is well capable of 100,000 miles , is reliable and will really impress the Boss.

    [sarcasm]
Judging by the picture - it only seems to attract rather gay looking people. [thinks - hope he doesnt have one]

Now if it was the Convertible - thats a whole different story ;-)

    Would he consider a volvo?
You can get a good spec s40 or v40td or i would recommend the s70 2.5tdi
Good reliable car good spec list and still does about 40 mpg.
    It can shift too.

If its going to cover those sort of miles, forget anything that doesnt have a name for reliability.

it would be: BMW, SAAB, Volvo or vw for me.

and id have a saab 9000 peronally, looks a bit different, big comfy car, cheap to buy, will do 100,000 without noticing.

the only other one i would consider is the xantia purely for the excellent diesel engine, much better than older mondeo/vectra diesels.
