There was a thread about this on the old site i think matey. NRJ had done a how to on it don't know if there is a link to it or whether he can tell you.

All you have to do is grab the knob  and twist it anti-clockwise until it screws off. There is a yellow plastic capping of some sort underneath the knob so you need to twist this off aswell (quite hard to do). Some people have said it comes off with the knob if you are lucky.

Then you can put your shiny new knob on.

    Good luck mate.

I think its a different method on a G mate, this just apllied to the Mk3.

I think someone had to cut through their knob  to get it off, not too sure though so best to ask a Mk4 owner.

1st G hard twist and it came off, Current G had to be cut off as I pulled the gear stick out off its mountings.

Try and twist it first, then cut it if it's not coming off.

    But
I just remembered, someone told me after I had just pulled mine off that twisting the gear shaft may break part of the linkage ( a bit thats plastic )

    so be careful twisting/pulling it.
If your not sure, cut it off.

Don't cut the metal shaft though !

I lost my how to on this so will do another one soon

but it the way as said above, also what I done when refitting is put the yellow thing inside my new knob so it fits and holds nicer that the crappy grub screw they give you.

thanks for the replies , I managed to get my knob off.
I just grab it and twisted it really hard till it came off !

then had to hacksaw the yellow bit down to the metal and used a flat head screwdriver to prise it off , put the new one straight on, thankfully the grub screw holds it ok although the yellow part cud prolly still fit on if needed but it wud have a sawn line out of it .
