    17`s or 18`s?

Ihave a 1.8 SXI with the standard 16" wheels. The question is 17`s or 18`s?. Do you notice a performance loss with either of these wheel sizes? how do the cars handle and drive (bumpy etc)?

    Cheers

Will accelarate slower but the handling is as good if not better as get more feel through the steering wheel. I noticed no difference in ride with 17's as opposed to the standard 15's.

However as you have 16's anyway go with 18's so they look better still!

I've got the SRi but I believe its the same setup

I didn't feel much difference when I went from 16s to 17s, ride quality is about the same, also Slim took me out in his car with 18s and there still seemed to be very little in it, its certainly not uncomfortable at all.

My 17's made no difference in speed. And mines a 1.4! LOL

If anything it made the car faster and better to drive as you can feel the road more and the steering gets more responsive.I can hear the road a lot more but only on the Mways :?

Oh and go for 18's if you can afford it as 17's can even look a bit small at times

18's suit the 'G' down to the ground

Glad you noticed no performance differences, mines alot slower to 60 now! But defs go with 18's if can, once lowered a bit will look very sweet indeed.

There are two main reasons why seventeens would result in a performance hit. One would be if the alloys were very heavy. The most common would be that your rolling radius has increased too much (normally due to tyres).

If that's the case then your car will be slower to sixty but maybe not as slow as it appears to you as your speedo will be reading too low. Ie. you'll actually be doing sixty when your speedo says 57 or 58.

I had 15" steel rims on with 65mm profile tyres  LOL

My 17's are 205/40/17 so i doubt there is much difference in the overall size? Hence the same speed.

They must be made light anyway as one has already buckled :?

I think the standard size is 185/65/15 is it? If that's the case then your rolling radius is actually smaller on the 17's. LOL.

Hold on... yeah, it's 4% smaller. When your speedo reads 70 you'll actually be doing 67.11 mph.

Your pick up will be quicker though. Good stuff.

ive got the standard 16s too and was going to go for 17s... but its a lot of hassle for that extra inch and as Alan says 17s dont look massive on a mk4.! im hopefully getting 18s in the next few weeks, i think they look just right on a mk4.
