MK4/G Frequently asked questions / How to (Updated)

    Will appear over time

    Standard stereo set-up specification

    Coupé:

Head unit (CD 500) - Power output 4*25W RMS

Front speakers - 17CM woofer + 1CM Tweeter with in built crossover

    Hatch/Saloon etc..

Front speakers - 17CM woofer + 1CM Tweeter with in built crossover

Rear speakers - 13CM + 1CM Tweeter with in built crossover

Door panel removal Coupé (to upgrade front door speakers)

    1) Prise out any switches (Electric windows and mirrors) with a screwdriver
    2) Prise off the door handle surround with a screw driver working around it gradually
    3) Remove the mirror casing that holds the tweeter
    4) Take out the 4 screws at the bottom of the door panel itself
    5) Prise off the panel itself until you have enough room to disconnect the door pull cable
    6) Remove the panel over the top of the door pin

    To refit:

    Opposite of the above

    Tips:

Use a piece of card under the screwdriver to avoid damage.

Running power cable from engine bay

    1) Remove tray to reveal fuse box, and give more room
    2) Locate where the bonnet release cable goes through the engine bay
    3) Look to the left of this slightly above, and there should be a spare grommet.
    4) Remove the grommet by pushing it from the engine bay into the car and make a hole through it for the size of cable being used
    5) Push cable through the grommet and Re-fit

Running better speaker cable through front doors

NOTE: Do not attempt if you are not confident at DIY

    1) Close window, and disconnect battery negative lead (If car has alarm consult manual)
    2) Disconnect the wiring connector from the door (Remove red clip and turn connector)
    3) Locate grommet inside car where the wires for mirrors etc.. go through
    4) Feed new speaker wire through this grommet and into the tubbing
    5) Make hole near the bottom of the tubing and bring cable through
    6) Drill hole underneath the connector and through the door
    7) Touch up any paint and place a grommet in this hole to stop the wire rubbing
8 ) Re-fit connector and make sure that the wire comes out of the bottom of the tubbing.
    9) Tidy up wires and Reconnect battey negative lead to make sure everything works correctly.

Tricky job, but good for sound quality.

Or you can run the speaker cable through the connector like so....

And for soundproofing the doors, you don't have to go to such an extreme but this pic (from my car)shows how to thoroughly soundproof the door

No, the the 5 door has a 13cm speaker and a tweeter in the back, but yes you are correct in that the 3 door does not have the tweeter in the back, just a 17cm speaker(unlike the 5 door which has a 13cm speaker). Some lower spec 5 doors also did not come with a tweeter

To take them trims off on a MK4 yes you do have to remove the seats. What most people do is lift the rubber seal around the doors and tuck it below that, there's a fair amount of room there
