    7" screen - opinions?

I'm looking to put in a 7" screen somewhere on my dash, at first I wanted a motorised flip out one that may or may not also incorporate the cd/dvd slot.

But after reading another post, I'm tempted to go for the SatNav dash from vaux (£11.75 incl) and get a screen fitted into where the satnav screen goes. If I did this my guess is that it would be cheaper as I could buy a budget standalone screen and I've seen a headunit on ebay that can do vcd/dvd/mp3 etc for around £200 (either that or buy cheap mp3 hu and hook up my ps2!)

What do you guys think would be best, price ways also.

If it was my car and it is possible i'd go for the sat-nav top panel and stick your screen in there.
Really would like to see some pics of that

Right I got the sat-nav dash today, took it to the local audio specialists, said would be lucky to get a 5' screen in it to make it look factory, if wanted something bigger would have to get rid of air vents below it and cut the screen down into that.

Sat and thought about it, even with fibreglass cant see it looking too good, unless someone has gone a different way about it?

according to basil u can get in a 8" lcd screen with trimming but how exactly its done, you'd have to ask him.

also, have a look at his pbase pics, his astra dash is totally weird but cool, he's fitted a double din from a merc? and moved stuff about, big job.

Just from looking at the dash piece if you want to mount the screen behind it and retain the curve on the top of the dash theirs no way an 8' would fit, the guy got a 5.6' screen and even that wouldnt fit!

Think will have to PM basil and find out how and what he has done!

Mat you are right about the easy bit probably right about the pics I had seen before I first attempted this mod.

I have got to say I Love car audio shops that say something is not possible, thats what a lot of places tell me about my double din bit when I ask them(my test to see weather they are good or not). Aren't they suprised when I take them out to my car and show them. These shops are the same ones that will probably tell you that the Show cars in the States were they rebuild the interiors aren't possible.

In case some of you are wondering as to how hard the double din was to do, this was done in an evening with the fibre work drying overnight, at most a 2 Hour job to do the initial work and then a overnight dry and then a further hour to finish it off.

So can you fit a 8 inch screen? If you use a module and you don't mind it sticking up a bit (see my pbase under Car audio)than yes as long as you use a non housed LCD module. Notice the pics on pbase has a 7" screen. Likewise the standard Vauxhall screen is a 5 inch LCD module which is not that much smaller than a standard housed(quality) LCD due to it being a Chip on glass design.

If whoever is planning this is prepared to wait a while I will be doing a how to, as I am in the initial stages of redoing my ICE setup. This setup will include amongst others a New boot Build(I have not forgotten about the how too MatG), full on AV install(screens, screens everywhere), new centre dash, Screen in rear view mirror(custom build), DVD in rear armrest, processor control in the roof etc.. etc.. AS you can gather from what is planned it could take a while to get it all done but the boot build and the Centre Console are the first things being done and will hopefully be done in the next month.

Think ive got mixed up here somewhere, looking at your pbase site you have fitted the screen in the middle of the dash however im trying to get one in the top where the sat-nav screen would normally go. How did you manage to move all the heater control dials down?

The audio company I went to are really good, said they wouldnt be happy trying to fit a big screen in the top as it would spoil the lines of the cars dash. Came up with a few custom ideas tho!

no mate you are looking at the wrong pics.

    Try the following web address:

    http://www.pbase.com/vbd/genral_ice

As for the heater controls they have enough give to move down, but I was finding one of them a bit hard to turn so I have eplaces the cables with longer ones.

cheers for the link, not sure if I like that too much. How easy would it be to alter the top of the sat nav dash to make it fit?
