View Full Version : New Clutch

Been confirmed today that I need a new clutch :(

Standard vauxhall one has died at 9000miles, bearing in mind the sort of power and torque my engine is running at it was to be expected :D

Few things, vauxhall have quoted £800 for a new standard one to be fitted. No point as it will only last another 9000miles. So anyone know where I can get an uprated one from ? Nothing on Regals or CS websites, and everyone intelligent at Regals is on Holiday, CS is shut completely until the New Year :(

My matey John will fit a new one for me, 7hours worth of work according to Vauxhalls book, so about £200 labour, but how much for a new 'uprated clutch' ??

Could try the boys at LMF.

www.lmfvauxhall.com

01858 433599 or 01858 434722

The Vectra-Sport site raves about there prices, but don't know whether they will do a clutch other than std. Worth a try at least.

Other than that, have a look on the Borg & Beck website to see if the do an uprated clutch.

Got this from the EDS Motorsport homepage ..

Coupling pices for Astra Turbo,Zafira OPC (Z20LET)
Gearbox: F23 Installation of the coupling with us only 350 euros
Printing plate € 220,- Couplingdisk
Type=torsion bounced Sinter slice € 350,- Couplingdisk
Type=torsion bounced disk with organic Racing coatings € 270,-

Makes *** All sense to me, I am assuming the standard one is the top one ??

Just found the bit in Dec 03 Total Vaux.

Sach's latest sport's clutch for Astra Coupe Turbo etc.

Designed to cope with up to 400bhp and 370 lb/ft of torque and can be used with std cover.
£610 from Regal.

PVD don't list a clutch for anything made after 98, so I guess the car's too new for them to have one.

I'll do a post on the VX220 site, as Pete from PVD is on there quite a lot.

Demon Tweeks can provide a Helix one, but the AP ones they do are not rated high enough :(

Cheers guys, just found the ad in TV too :(

£610 for the clutch, they are having a giraffe. I will try and blag Chris @ regals for come ££ off that I think.

Vx quoted 7hours for fitting, which is acceptable I suppose. Puts off buying my new alloys for afew months :( :(

Car has done 9000 miles. Was running standard power for all of 3weeks, before being tampered with various bits and bobs. Now been running phase II for about 2000miles, around 250ish bhp, clutch has obviously decided it cannot cope, part and parcel of modding cars, is that everything needs to be done for it to work properly.

Pain time of the year though, as no bugger is open for enquiries ! :(

Where's MatG's mobile number ??? £610 divided by 2, £100 from Rob ....  I'm kidding. It is inevitable when you tune cars. :D

If you need some money mate give me a bell you have my number!! To be fair though that clutch should handle that power? Warrenty?

Feelling very gulty and very sorry!!

Feelling very gulty and very sorry!!

DONT EITHER YOU OR ROB FELL GUILTY !!

Unfortunately the clutch was confirmed as fried this afternoon, so no I'm not kidding. But with it being holiday season, Regals and CS, the most obvious suppliers of new ones, are both off, so the car is temporarily off the road for afew weeks.

Warranty isn't an option, as Mr Manager at vauxhalls says the clutches are only rated to 250bhp, and a similar torque figure, both of which I should be over :D :D

I was kidding about the money. I was going to change the clutch and install the LSD at the sametime, but not until April/May time. As it happens these plans are brought forward and wheels pushed back. You gotta laugh about it mate, otherwise wheres the fun in modding cars ???

I suppose so mate but I do feel some what responsable. If I can help in any way please give me a call, you know the number.

May be worth speaking to V tuning about it all, ask Pete for the details.

Check the status with the warranty mate, mine went at 11000 on a standard engine. Did it burn out or has it collapsed?

Mine jammed up due to the friction plate failing, literally came apart. If it is the same problem on yours, in spite of the power gains, I would be pushing VXL for a new one

mate sorry to hear the beast is off the road for a few weeks. Anything I can do, give me a call.

Plate is fried, and the stell casing doesn't look to healthy

Spoke to Vauxhall and they have been v v helpful, big thumbs up to them. They even offered to replace the part, under a warranty claim, IF I paid in cash ;) - but they would only replace to a standard clutch. Don't see the point of that !

Will speak to Chris @ Regals and get one of those Sachs ones. Should do the trick ;) Umming and Ahhing about slipping in the LSD at the same time. Might aswell spend £1500 if you are spending £1000 already :) :)

She'll be back. Might do some more shopping at Regals on Friday to cheer me up alittle

The joys of being able to tune a turbo easiley

Sach's tbh are a very good clutch, my mate runs this on an XE and it made a big difference with the power he's running.

Also try Gavin Wallace, as he's into the turbo's big time.

Telephone: 01224 708444
24H Mobile: 07803 183837

Will have to be supply only as he's in Scoutland but he might come down here if you are nice

Got a fitter lined up already. Just a case of sourcing the clutch. Needs to be done ASAP as the car is running, and smelling like shit at the moment !

LordNikon
30-12-2003, 21:16
Decided I want that Sachs unit. Looks good, and can easily cope with the max power for the engine, so if anyone can source it cheaper than £610, I'll split the difference 50/50, and they can have it. ie: If you can get the unit for £500, then you get £55 cash :) :)

Needed ASAP though

LordNikon
30-12-2003, 21:29
The only website I can find is ...

http://www.sachsna.com/

According to the advert in TV, it is the latest Sachs Sports clutch, available for the Calibra turbo, Astra Coupe Turbo and Vx220 2.2. It is available from Regals.

Can handle up to 400bhp and 370lbft of torque.

Cost is £610 and can be used with the standard clover to give a softer feel

Spoken to Chris @ regals.

Car is finished, and it has

New clutch
New slave cylinder
New plates
New cover
AND A ...

Quickshift kit :) :) :)

Chris is remapping the car, as it seems to be holding higher boost from the uprated plates. Just bringing the fuelling into line, so I can benefit fully :) :)

MatG
07-01-2004, 14:42
be interesting to hear what you think. I want the quick shift kit, not got around to sorting it out. Are they easy to fit do you know?

LordNikon
07-01-2004, 15:18
Takes 2 hours fitting according to Chris at Regals.

I would let you try mine when i see you next, but I dont know whether I can afford it ! :) :) :) - I'm joking mate.

As always I will give an update in a week and let you know my findings

Regal F23 Quick Shift kit - £161.78  Clickety Click (http://www.regal-shop.co.uk/asps/ShowDetails.asp?id=3987)

Rally Design Quickshift Gear Lever Kit - £24.50  Clickety Click (http://www.raldes.co.uk/2003/page086.htm)

Depends on the gearbox, so might not be as cheap as £24.50, but worth finding out.

LordNikon
07-01-2004, 18:42
Just got home from picking the car up, and giving it alittle thrashing. Clutch is very stiff, and pulling away is pretty difficult now TBH. New quickshift has made the gearbox very small. Throws are now a matter of cm's rather than afew inches.

Old clutch was well fried, and by the looks of it has been slipping for a while now. Going to get some new uprated engine mounts fitted, as the vibration when taking up drive is quite bad. This apparently will ease with time.

Overall, very happy to have her back.

PS - Chris has also played with the map again, and it know holds 17psi in 3rd-5th. Only afew extra psi, but every little helps :)

MatG

that clutch should last forever!! Glad to hear its back on the road and you are having fun with it. What are the uprated engine mounts?ere from details etc ;)

Nrj
07-01-2004, 21:31
The regal q/shift is a different design to the rally one, the rally one is just the linkage the regal one is whole shift rod.

Clutch wont last 4ever

uprated mounts will eventually shake the shell welds apart :(

LordNikon
07-01-2004, 22:01
Got a 2 year 100,000 mile warranty with the clutch, so it will certainly see out my ownership of the car.

Quickshift is the whole rod, and is excellent, once you get used to it.

New engine mounts are just poly rather than rubber. Just stops it vibrating at take up off the clutch. The bits is soo hard now, that it vibrates a little. Will get there eventually.

LSD is not in no. Dont see the need at the moment. Will keep an eye out for a new 6speed version of my box, and get one of them with an LSD. Will make alot of difference having the 6th gear.

Nope afraid not. Certainly not in the Z20let instance. Not sure on your config mate so I couldn't say for certain.

I know mine was fitted with the box off the vehicle.
