Hi all,

Basically I noticed that the last few weeks my turbo has been using quite a lot of oil - okay I drove much more than I usually do in the last few weeks, but still.

So how much oil does yours use?

Just checking whether mine is normal really. There is no smoke and it seems to boost fine.

Thanks.

Mine never used a drop, never needed a top between changes, even if that was every 3 months:redface:

It never uses any and I check on a weekly basis.I had to top it up a bit once, about a week after an oil change, but I probably didn't top it up properly to start with!
I thought the ZLET had an appetite for oil, or so I heard!

Used to use a litre a week.

Did a rebuild and now uses none :)

I suppose mine looses about at most half a litre every 5000 miles which is about when I chnage the oil

What could be the cause of oil burning?
(Anything to do warming engine up vs not warming engine up in cold weather?)

At the moment it doesn't really use THAT much, only about 1/3 of a litre so far in the last 1000 miles, but obviously I dont want it to get worse.

The turbo seems good - or so it looks like. How can I check to be sure?

Thanks.

I am getting through about 5 litres a week atm... but that is because my turbo is absolutely shagged.

Mine dont use any...

I thrash mine daily and do 13,000 miles a year at least.... If it used oil i'd worry!

So what could be the reason that it uses oil?
Assuming the turbo is okay.

Thanks.

If the turbo is ok then it'll either be valves or rings mate.... My last car had a problem with the rings, not enough to smoke but enough to use a litre every few months.

There is no oil in the coolant tank though?
And can't see any white residure on the oil filler cap.

By the way there is a little bit of smoke from the exhaust today, not much and not blue, is it just condensation? (I bloody hope so!)

did it happen when you 1st started the car up from cold or was it doin this when it was up to temp or both?

Mine was using so much becasue the rings and valve stem oil seals were gone/worn

Mine uses a little, but not too much. i just keep it topped up. Im just hoping its not a death knell round the corner.

More when I just start the car up, the reduces gradually. But even when the car was up to 85 degree, there was still a little bit of smoke - which I think on a normal car there shouldn't be any? Car drives absolutely fine by the way.

Lee: Any tell tale signs before they were gone? I checked coolant tank and there is no oil.

Matt: So far I only had to top it up once, but I am a bit worried because I am really skint recently as my other car is written off and insurance has not paid out. Would be really bad timing if something is seriously wrong on this car.

Many thanks!

My coupe uses about half a litre max. every 2,000 - 3,000 miles which in my opinion is fairly healthy, my turbo is in good condition and so is my engine, it doesn't smoke on cold start up or when the turbo is boosting so i'm not worrying about it, untill somethings gives lol

Mine was 'blue smoking' earlier today. Had driven from Newcastle to Perth, stopped in asda and it gave a little blue smke for a couple of minutes then stopped and was fine.

Its a reasonably new turbo on the car and had done 91k.

It uses about half a litre every 1000 miles?

Mine used to smoke when i put my foot down hard (high revs) and if i was coasting/slowing down in gear Then put my foot down again

Mine smokes now (just started today I think...?) when its idling for a while.

Could it be coincidence that I cahnged the oil recently? Its got 5w30 in, but have bought some 10w40 FS to replace it. Could it be that the oil is too thin?!

I am using 10w40 now.
Should I mix it with some 5w30?

And how smokey was the smoke? Like big cloud or just enough to be seen from the rear view mirror?

No smoke at all yesterday or today.

And I have undone to boost pipe to check - there is some oil, but only very little.

Confused now...

Hard accelerating was just enough to see in the rear view mirror.

Slowing in gear for 10 seconds then put my foot down would be an A-Team style smoke screen lol

My car seems alright now... weird...

THe motors themselves use little if any oil. Normally if it uses a bit its because the turbo squeazes a bit out as you startup. That is a bit weeps out past the turbo seal on the exhaust side before the turbine starts to turn and create a dynamic oil barrier and thus stop oil from leaving the centre cartridge.
