A lot of the recommendations (oilman...) are for a 5w40 FS and so many are saying to avoid the semi stuff.

I have 5w30 in now and all is well. Oil usually sits at about 85-90 celcius on normal driving, going up to about 95-100 on a good blast. No tapping from a 91k miler engine on cold starts etc etc.

The 5 is a good choice coming into the winter and i wouldn't say there's too much difference between the 30 and 40 in the winter. (waits to be shot down in flames for the last comment!!)

im running 0w40 mobil 1 stuff at the moment and its running sweet as nut. doesnt use any oil at all. up until now ive been using 10w40 semi-synth, but il stick to the fully synth from now on becuase of the extended oil change range.

i was always changing it at 3k miles on semisynth, but with fullysynth u can leave it a fair bit longer. im going to give it a good 5-6k miles before i change it again, pouring money down the drain if you do it before.
