engine knocking???

Hi there,
My mate has a Astra 2.0l SXi DTi and is having problems. When you start the engine up there seems to be a slight knocking noise and a terrible wiggle on the engine!? Also, when clutch is de-pressed there is a low whirring noise that pulsates, could this be the clutch thrust bearing on the gearbox?

Thats interesting, I recently hired a Zafira 2.0DTi diesel to go to London, and when I pulled into Oxford services and stopped, there was a bit of a knocking from the engine and a wiggle - it sounded with the wiggle as if the engine was hunting. I am wondering what this was??

could be the diff thats what mine sounded like when it went

The whirring is most probably the clutch release bearing
