I'm dissapointed with the lack of spooling sound. I've had various other turbo cars but the Z20Let its almost silent, is it down to the turbo? I've tried a k+n and a pipercross induction kit ( i knot their not favioured aposed 2 a panel filter) but its almost silent. Is there any thing i could do to make it louder, theres no better sound than a turbo coming on boost?

Well, no. I have an Apexi cone filter and the induction noise is mental...

The best bit is when the OE DV dumps, the pressure comes back out of the Apexi! The sound is absolutely mental!
(Especially because of the Apexi's shape, its like a loud speaker)
It sounds a bit like wastegate chatter, but it is not.

I cant really see how changing the filter would change the induction sound. I changed from a pipercross to an apexi (undoubtably the best)on my old sx and nothing changed. With the filters i've used on the astra, you can hear the turbo stall and slight spool-up. I wonder if the turbo was designed with noise in mind?

i took my pipercross induction kit off, it was too noisey (says he with an evo sound-a-like exhaust) :red:
tis true, an induction kit makes a massive difference to hearing the turbo spool up and the sound of the boost being dumped.
try extending the AFM wires to the front of the engine then put on a apexi pod filter, if you cant here that then theres something seriously wrong8)
anyone got any pics of the apexi set up??
is it this filter??

so all you have done to achieve the sound is remove the standard air box and in its place popped in the apexi?

yes just comes straight off the 90degrees hose form the afm, best to have a cold aid supply aswell and you could even put a heat shield to stop unwanted heat ;)
im tempted :)
but soooooooooooooo many people say 'go the panel filter route'
im confused :(
LMAO!!
any notice in power loss due to heat soak?

i have the pannel filter and veccy c pipe on at the mo, but for that price you may as well have a go, i dont think you use oil on it so it wont kill the afm
i think i might give it a try in the 2.2 set up :D
how would you describe the sound ??
lol
if you can.
sorry to be a pain but what diameter do the hoses need to be ??
thanks

This is my setup.

The metal connector on the Apexi is 80mm.
But it comes with a 80mm>70mm reducer hose.
It is of course better to not use the reducer hose if you can find a silicon 80mm hose.
I don't notice any heat-soak at all, except when idle, which is good for me as it warms the car up quicker in the morning.
Apexi is the only one (I think) that doesn't use oil. So it won't kill the AFM. To clean, just use a soft brush and a hoover.

When boosting, it goes... "weeeeeeeee" and "shhhhhhhhh" at the same time.
The faster the spooling, the high the pitch of the "weeeeeeeee".
When dumping, it goes... "chattt---shh---chatttt---zzz" in a split second.
Good enough for you? :D

Actually, thinking about it, no the Apexi is crap, don't buy it.
Just buy my 2.2 airbox with green filter which I am selling here. :D

You can get a Universal APexi Filter with a 70mm flange. The standard piping would then fit as the standard AFM is 70mm.
