i got a astra gsi few weeks ago which had a dumpvalve and a cone air filter and it was hesitant round 60/70 and the EML would come on then go off with no difference to the performance, took the dumpvalve off which was alot better until the other day on the motorway when putting my foot down it would judder then the EML flashed then stayed on and it went into limp mode and lost alot of power and sounded and was driving very roughly and when ticking over it sounds lumpy like going to cut out, i got the aa out and when they got there the light went out and they tested it and the code PO170 Fuel trim bank 1 came back as the error and the car went out of limp mode but still when put foot down would judder light came back on again today and very rough, just looking for abit of advise its going into the garage but is it ok to drive on limp mode

More than likely a knackered AFM (Air Flow Meter) - most induction kits tend to kill the AFMs on the ZLETs so it looks like this is whats happened to yours.

Wouldnt bother with takin it to Vx - just get a new AFM

I'll get ya some prices together....iirc Courtenay Sport were doin a good offer on these a few months back - they may still be doin so.

does sound like the dreaded AFM, im on my 5th:hysterical: that teach me for using an oil based filter. oil gets on the afm element and kills it.
either using a paper filter like standard or if u want induction use an apexi one.

The Part number for the AFM is 9201425

Theres a few on ebay at the mo for varying prices : http://search-desc.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&_trksid=m37&satitle=9201425&sacat=-1%26catref%3DC6&fts=2&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&sadis=200&fpos=NE38+7NU&sabfmts=1&saobfmts=insif&ga10244=10425&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1&fsoo=1

Unfortunately Ive heard mixed reports about the cheaper ones sumtimes being false economy.

Therefore youd be best advised to contact LMF on 01858 433 599 (mention Astra Sport and u might get some discount), Autovaux is another place to try and maybe Courtenay Sport etc.

Good luck and hope u get it resolved.
More often than not the light just goes out once the new AFM is fitted. Should be perfectly fine to drive in limp mode although not the best performance wise but at least you can use it!

most owners tend to go through a few - but not as many as u would if u retained the cone filter....

its often a good idea to keep a spare just incase!!! Maybe a cheapo off ebay

Foam filters with oil have never been proven to damage AFMs.

It's fact that they break and not just on Vauxhalls as my brothers 156 had to have a new one for similar reasons.

well u find that ma lot Zlet AFM's probs tend to stem from oil based filters, since i changed back to paper, i aint had any problems at all in last 6 months, previous 6months i bought 4 plus one that was on there 2 start.
well known that if oil gets on the element, it will kill the AFM.

but has been known for ppl too over oil their filters, which indeed happened to me, the idiot that had it before had over oiled the filter:rolleyes::hysterical:

im running a foam oiled filter, i just used the oil sparingly and let it soak in over night, then pressed it onto a clean paper towel to remove any access oil, been fine for 6 months now. i killed an afm on my old c20xe with a cone filter which i over oil, it was dead in within a week.

You can'r blame the foam filter and oil if some one put too much oil on it can you!

i had this problem when a garage fitted a dump valve for me.found out the problem was they dropped a bolt into the turbo which mashed up the first turbine in it.
