New to this but I hope someone can help. I've finally accepted that my smokey coupe is down to a goosed turbo and am considering fitting a new one myself. How easy is this for a fairly competent DIY mechanic and where's the best place to get the turbo from?

best place to get the vxr turbo from is lmf mate.... just give them a call and tell steve that you want the vxr turbo and fitting kit

Believe it or not the VXR (LEH) turbo is substantially cheaper than the standard LET one and providing u get the fitting kit it should be a straight forward swap.

As a competant mechanic you should be fine, problems normally come from novices being a bit heavy handed and shearing head bolts etc. Some find it easier to remove or move the rad to give a little extra room down there. Might be worth changing your first cat convertor to a open pipe whilst you have it off. Produces excellent gains and easily changed with turbo off.

cost me £520 all inclusive (except for the mounting paste) from LMF a couple of weeks ago.

If your going to change this yourself be very careful when removing the manifold bolts/studs - you dont want to sheer these as i did - just complicates things! Soak them in WD40 or equivalent the night before and take your time when removing the bolts slowly and gently.

You may want to invest in an extractor set to remove the old studs and exteension for leaverage:

Also the zlet site seems to be back up which has a very good guide on how to do this (just my luck!):

Gud luck

Thanks for the quick responses and from what you've said I'm going to give it a go. Couldn't order a turbo from LMF on line so I'll give them a call tomorrow.

oh, can someone clarify if fitting a vxr turbo alone is possible? or would you need to replace some other parts inorder for the thing to work correctly?
