View Full Version : To fit or not fit Regals cam?

I have the Regal inlet cam sitting here but unsure if to fit it or not.

I have been in 2 minds for ages.

After hearing (In the last few days) about a member on here taking his car to Regal for a remap (He had fitted the hardwear) and for it then to not be running 100%. He was told by Regal that he paid for a map and thats what he got. Quick blast up the road 'to test it' and thats it. No rolling road to show what the engine was doing or what gains (If any) had happened.

Where as Courtney load the maps and then optimise them on the rolling road to get the best out of them. There was a member on here that Courtney loaded 10 odd maps onto to get the best for his car.

So Regal the pro's are:

Regal are the only ones that can map their cam
Regal are closer (About 1/2 hr away)

Cons:
Here more worse storys than Courtney
Customer service seems to be worse depending on who you talk to

Pro's for Courtney:
Seem to try harder to get the best for your car
Very helpfull and informative when I have phoned
Dont think I have heard many (If any) bad storys about Courtney

Cons:
About 2-3 hours away
Cant map Regals cam

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo what would you do.

i'd personally goto regal. i've been in the same situation, and after umming and arring, i eventually booked into regal, even though its going to be about a 4-5hr journey each way.

If you have the cam already, it seems silly not to get it put on and optimised.

Regal dont offer the rolling road included in the price, but are cheaper than the courtenay one, so for my money, I can get a map, a switchable map, and a rolling road, still a tiny bit cheaper than going to courtenay so its all swings and roundabouts really.

They do the roadtest, and see how it performs, and if it didnt drive well, i very very much doubt they'd leave it. So once they'd mapped it so it felt fine, i'd then pay the extra £65, which i'm doing, to get it on the rolling road, to see whats going on, and then see what happens from then on. I think i'm even going to suggest they, or atleast ask them if they'd do a second test drive to see if its still ok.

In my opinion, and thats only "my" opinion, Regals customer service has been spot on, whereas ive been nothing but fed up of courtenays

I would never go to any tuner without getting your car on the rolling road its just not worth the risk. I have recently just done a 650 mile round trip to courtenay the map took its time and i had 6 runs on the RR before i was happy but i got good results will deffo be going back again for a stage 4.

I would not have any major work without a RR thrown in for free. Any good tuner would agree a price up front with a RR thrown in

why is it a problem for courtenay to map regal cam ? or they just don't want to do it because it's from regal ?

when changing cams You need to put the car on the RR but there is one more important thing - AFR. You can map the car w/o RR but not w/o wideband

pretty sure mike warner had the cam mapped at courtenay - easy option lee is to have it mapped and have it rolling roaded at regal - pay the extra and if it doesnt perform have words with them until its sorted.

Go to Regal.. Have the cam, map, RR and testdrive etc.. still cheaper than courtenay. if they are 1/2 an hour away drive down and have a chat they are not that bad trust me :)

Courtenay can map for the cam!! They don't change much anyway, they raise the tick over slightly to reduce lumpy idle. Not sure if there much else they do because its a machanical mod, its pysically allowing more to flow through the engine.

You seem to not be understanding what a cam is. EDIT - in reply to the thread, not directed at the previous post

The map tells the injectors when to open and how much fuel to inject, for a certain amount of air theres a certain amount of fuel that should be injected, this depends on whether you are in the economy/cruise, power, or transitional parts of the map, also on a turbo car the amount of boost you have (fuel used to cool the cylinders at higher boost levels) and obviously the amount of air in the combustion chamber. The ignition depends on the RPM and the boost levels, more RPM = more ignition lead, more boost pressure = less ignition (generally) and again on the volume of air. Neither of these things depend at all on the cam. The only thing the cam determines is the inlet restriction or lack of at different revs, im sure you appreciate that different cams are optimised for different RPMs in different engines.

This in mind, I cannot see why regal are the only one who can map for their cam. Sure they might be the only ones with an off the shelf map that they can just slap on your car with no attention to your previous mods, but the difference over whatever map you have at the moment will be so small, that anyone should do it.

I'm not suggesting there are no changes to be made to your map, of course there will be little tweaks to make to optimise the fueling and ignition to better match the new cam characteristics (for instance when it comes on cam [now higher in the rev range] you will probably be adding slightly less fuel than before, because of the decreased restriction and increased efficiency you can use less fuel, and therefore gain more power - because the excess "cooling fuel" isnt damping your ignition).

What profile is the regal cam? Is it any different from an X20XEV inlet cam?

i've always wondered why regal are the only ones who can map their cam, sounds like a sales pitch to me, aka bollox.

i cant see any particular reason not to goto Regal, especially as they are so close, and its their cam.

Whats putting you off as such? just the bad stories?

The bad stories ive heard lately all seem to be from people too scared to go back and say they have problems. So instead moan on here saying this doesnt work, that doesnt work whereas sensible people would pick up the phone and say something isnt working, please fix it. I really do doubt if you had a problem they would turn you away, even if someone has stated that, im sure there were other parts of the story than this. it just doesnt make sense for them to do that

Courtenay can map for the cam!!

Didnt they try and map Mike warners and didnt gain anything?
